Despite its superb reputation, you could almost miss the venue if you were not using the satnav and being beady eyed. Once we spotted it, we parked up in a nearby street and made our way in, where we were warmly greeted by owner, Rafi. It was early evening and had not been open for long but it didn’t take long for quite a few others to arrive. We soon realised why.

I came for beef….

I had come for the beef but, as I say, I have a real appetite for meat, and since lamb is my favourite, I started with lamb chops. We were served a well presented and welcome feast. There were four or five large chops on each plate. These were perfectly cooked and seasoned in a subtle and spicy marinade. Each chop was generously meaty with enough fat for those of us who like it to enjoy while not causing any concern for those who prefer to cut it away.

The lamb was served with pasta in sauce and salad dressed in mild vinaigrette. It is fair to say that had I not set my mind on trying a rare sirloin steak, I could have easily have called it a day after the starter – and felt more than satisfied with the chops.

Full of praise for our hosts

The taste and texture of the lamb had heightened my curiosity further so I was determined to try the steak, while my companion tucked into a chicken salad. The steak was definitely worth writing home about. I prefer my steak rare because I believe the meat retains more of its flavour that way but that also means I am more sensitive to the taste. The Angus definitely hit the spot and I enjoyed every bite with deliciously filling thick cut fries, a side salad and peppercorn sauce. The mushrooms were a bonus.

My companion was more than a little happy with her chicken salad and was full of praise for our hosts.

To summarise, let me say that Bison Steakhouse is worth a good run in the car to get to if you appreciate quality meat meals, regardless of whether you are looking for halal food or not. The staff take care, effort and pride in their craft and the steakhouse comes with no pretences. The focus is placed where it should be – wholesome, tasty, high quality food in a welcoming and homely atmosphere. In my mind there is a real humility and honesty about Bison Steakhouse and I am sure they will always have a full house on word of mouth and reputation.

I will certainly be going back for seconds.
